Abortion Speakout
Tickets $20
In February of 1969, members of the Redstockings Brigade, a feminist radical group, disrupted a New York Joint Legislature Committee hearing on New York's abortion law. Denied the ability to testify, the members condemned the hearing and decided to stage their own. On March 21, 1969, in the borrowed sanctuary of Reverend Finley Schaef's Washington Square Methodist Church, Redstockings held the first-ever abortion speak-out. The women testified from their own experience with unwanted pregnancy and illegal abortion. As one of the women said, "We are the true experts, the only experts, we who've had abortions.”
This staged reading is transcribed from a cassette tape recording made that day of women speaking, for the first time publicly, from personal experience about abortion.
