Bassist and composer Joan Torres got into music before becoming a
teenager. Throughout the years he grew as a musician and developed an
interest for Jazz music. He has studied Jazz with a list of great
musicians like puerto rican legend Tony Batista (William Cepeda), Oscar
Stagnaro (Paquito D'Rivera) and Matthew Garrison (son of John Coltrane’s
bassist Jimmy Garrison). His ability was recognized by musical
institutions like Berklee College of Music who offered him many
scholarships to attend their summer programs and the college as a
full-time student. He developed his musical skills by studying and
performing a wide variety of music including Salsa, Rock, Reggae, Latin
Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Jazz, Classical Choir music and even Brazilian
Capoeira music.
After years of playing and sharing with other musicians and other projects
he decided to start his own with some of the music he had written over the
years. It can be said that these tunes synthesize a lot of his musical
experiences and influences over the years. That's how the group Joan
Torres's All is Fused was born. The group features some of the most
sought-after musicians in the local music scene; guitarist Sergio Gonzalez
(Fana), pianist David Ojeda (Domino Saints), drummer Fernando Garcia
(Yerba Bruja), alto saxophonist Jonathan Suazo (Paoli Mejias), and
guitarist Gabriel Vicéns (SM Quinteto). They assembled and recorded the
first album, titled "Before", on January 10 and 11, 2012 at Playbach
Studio in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The album was released on May 21, 2012
with the official release show taking place on July 5, 2012 at the local
spot known as Il Jazz Club. This show was also the beginning of a small
album release tour throughout July. Having acquired a following in the
Puerto Rico area, they decided to invest some of their energy on getting
their music beyond the island and into the world.
During the first half of 2013 Joan Torres has also performed with many
well-known local artists like singer-songwriters Fana and Rique Colón. He
along with drummer Fernando Garcia offered drum and bass clinics at Stevan
Micheo Music. In February, his group performed some of the music from the
album "Before" in an Jazz forum for the community of the Puerto Rico Music
Conservatory. In March 2013 Joan Torres's All is Fused was nominated in
two categories for the 12th Annual Independent Music Awards for their
critically-acclaimed debut album "Before". Currently, they're working on
their second album and planning a tour through New Orleans, Louisiana in
November 2013.
